She had ignored the coffee calling her name from Fran’s Coffee long enough. She wanted to sit at home and take the day to unwind, listen to music, or watch her favorite Hallmark movie, but instead, she was heading in the direction of Fran’s with only one thing in mind—coffee.

She didn’t care what Fran and Cara would think, say, or do. She needed coffee, and Lord knew she couldn’t make it at home. Well, she could, but it wouldn’t taste the same.

Pulling the door open, she entered the coffee shop and was instantly welcomed by the scent she had been dying to smell. Ground coffee beans and the subtle hint of hazelnut. It was just what she needed after all.

It wasn’t until she approached the counter she realized she had forgotten her wallet at home, on the table, right next to her door. Crap. She turned to leave, but a voice called out to her. “Emmalee, it’s good to see you.”

“I’ll be right back,” she promised, heading for the door. “I forgot my wallet at home, so I’ll—”

“Nonsense, it’s on the house. Get your butt back over here,” Fran called out, smiling that warm smile Emmalee loved to see every morning. She wasn’t about to make the woman say it again, even though she was still embarrassed for having forgotten to grab her money. “What’ll it be today?”

Fran was well aware of Emmalee’s plan to try something new every day, keeping it interesting and fun. “How about the Monkey Bread Cinnabon?”

“Good choice,” Fran said with a wink as she ventured over to the mini fridge. Reaching in, she pulled out what she needed and closed the door with her foot. “This one’s a personal favorite, and a lot of people tend to like it, too.”

Emmalee smiled, taking a second to look around. She didn’t care who was here to witness her ordering coffee instead of sitting on a bus headed for the city. Though she didn’t care to admit she loved this little town, she couldn’t leave. She’d waited her whole life to make this move, and she wasn’t going to let a misunderstanding—or whatever it had been—take it all away from her. She knew better than that. No matter what came next, she would stand her ground and not give up.

“Here you go,” Fran said, handing the freshly made drink across the counter. “Go ahead and have a seat, I’ll be over in a minute or two. Let me make sure our part-timer will be okay running the show.”

Emmalee laughed at the nickname Cara had been given. Of course, it was all in good fun. The family was lighthearted and fun to be around. If she could choose any family to be a part of, it would be the Mitchells, hands down.

She headed for a vacant booth near a large open window displaying the town’s busy sidewalk. Kids laughed and carried on conversations as they rode their bikes down the street. A group of elderly women huddled close in a circle near the front of the coffee shop, gossiping about the latest happenings around town.
